Call for economic partnership between Belarus, Baltic states

MINSK, 28 August (BelTA) – Efforts to find ways of mutually beneficial economic partnership between Belarus and the Baltic states represent the key to good neighborly relations. The opinion was voiced by Alexei Dzermant, a research officer of the Philosophy Institute of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus, during the roundtable session held on 27 August to discuss prospects of the Baltic region, BelTA has learned.

The researcher said: “Searching for vacant niches in the real sector of the economy of Belarus and the Baltic states that can be filled with mutually beneficial partnership is the key to conflict-free good neighborly relations as well as tighter interaction between the Eurasian Economic Union and the European Union, since the Baltic region represents kind of a transport portal at their borders.”

Belarus is intent on keeping up its economic industrial tradition. There are all reasons to believe that Belarus will succeed in its endeavor, noted the expert. The Baltic states have made the transition to a post-industrial economy, which is characterized by a prevailing share of services — tourism, retail, transport and logistics. “Our country has a very important pragmatic interest in exporting its merchandise, including via Baltic ports. The Baltic region is interested in the same thing since cooperation with us in these matters helps earn a lot of money,” noted the research officer of the Philosophy Institute of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus.

“The Belarus economy still keeps its industrial core. Projects are being implemented to preserve the core in the future, for instance, the construction of the China-Belarus Industrial Park or the construction of the Belarusian nuclear power plant. All of them are in one way or another geared towards interest on the part of the Baltic states,” concluded Alexei Dzermant.
