Over 80% of Belarus residents feel safe, secure
MINSK, 1 February (BelTA) – Over 80% of Belarus’ residents are confident in their safety and security in the street and public places, BelTA learned from the opinion poll conducted by the Information and Analysis Center.
An overwhelming majority of those polled (82%) stated that they feel safe and secure in the street and public places while 16% of the respondents denied having that feeling.
When broken down by the region, the opinion poll indicates that Belarusians in Grodno Oblast and Minsk Oblast feel safe and secure (an average of 86.5% said so). Fewer Belarusians in Brest Oblast, Mogilev Oblast, and the city of Minsk feel safe and secure (79% in each area).
According to the opinion poll, a dominant majority of the respondents (43%) believe that the crime situation in their area (town, city, village) has not changed in the last 12 months. As many as 36% of those polled responded by saying the crime situation has improved while only 6% said it has worsened.
As many as 45% of the residents of Grodno Oblast said the crime situation has improved in the last 12 months. The number of those, who say so, is lower in the city of Minsk and Mogilev Oblast (32.5% on the average).
While evaluating the crime situation at the level of oblasts (the city of Minsk) and the country on the whole, one third of the citizens (35%) said they believe the situation has not changed in the last 12 months. On the average, 28% believe that the situation has improved while 5.5% say it has worsened.
The public opinion poll indicates that in the last 12 months just like in previous periods citizens most often (17%) contacted law enforcement agencies to get their issues and problems resolved. More than half of those, who contacted these agencies in the last 12 months, were satisfied with how their problems were handled.
According to the opinion poll, 71.5% of the nation are satisfied with the working hours and service conditions of law enforcement agencies. Only 5% are dissatisfied with them.
The figures are taken from the opinion poll conducted by the Information and Analysis Center in late 2015 to evaluate the performance of law enforcement and auditing agencies, courts, and assess the corruption situation in the country.
