Mogilev honours eighteen families whose family members were killed in Afghan war

MOGILEV, February 11 (BelTA) – Eighteen families from Mogilev, whose family members were killed during the Afghan war, were awarded with the Medal “20th anniversary of the withdrawal of the Soviet troops from Afghanistan”. The award ceremony was held in the Mogilev City Hall on February 11, BelTA learnt. During the ceremony, first deputy chairman of the Mogilev City Council Oleg Litenkov noted that though many years have passed since the withdrawal of the troops from Afghanistan, none of its participants are not forgotten. “Their heroic deed is an example of patriotism and faithful service to the Motherland for younger generations,” the official underscored. According to Oleg Litenkov, the Mogilev City Council has adopted special programmes to support soldiers-internationalists and their families; the local authorities actively cooperate with the Belarusian Union of Afghan War Veterans. The first deputy chairman presented the families of soldiers-internationalists with the anniversary medals and invited them to attend a meeting-requiem and a concert timed to the 20th anniversary of Soviet troops’ withdrawal from Afghanistan on February 13. The medal “20th anniversary of the withdrawal of the Soviet troops from Afghanistan” is presented to citizens of the Republic of Belarus (including posthumously) who took part in the combat actions in Afghanistan from December 1979 to February 1989. The anniversary medal is also presented to the military men of the Belarusian Armed Forces, other forces and military formations, officials and other people who have made a great contribution to the patriotic education of Belarusian citizens, development of the veteran movement, social and medical rehabilitation of soldiers-internationalists, disabled people and members of their families.
